Your half-day adventure will include six stops where you will gain great insight about the local food, history, and culture. Your group is kept to no more than twelve people at a time offering an intimate and very personal experience, unlike the large-group regular tours offered. Your ears will be filled with the sounds of the busy city and your stomach will soon be teased with the wonderful flavors of different foods.
This walking tour is much more than just a foodie experience, learn about the immigrants that shaped the city's food scene and how San Francisco shaped them. Many foods that are commonly thought of as Mexican and Chinese were invented here. The Mission embodies an ever-changing melting pot of flavors and culture, with award winning recipes that tell a story of a revolutionary city shaped by significant social movements and international influences. Plus, there is a Secret Dish which you can only find out about on the day.
Begin in the heart of the Mission District, discover an incredibly lively and vibrant neighborhood with a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Have the wonderful opportunity to discover both the local Latino inspired dishes as well as the myriad of cultures that have made their imprint on the Mission today. You will enter a community that fosters stunning political street art, both on the main roads and weaving through the city neighborhoods. Venture to one of the best taquerias in the country, where people travel from all over the world come to taste the best of the best and sample the Mission-style burrito.
Next, make your way to an Italian bakery, a San Francisco institution for over 50 years, to pick up a sweet treat you can save for later. Learn the stories of the San Francisco's immigrants and gain a deep appreciation for their influence on the city. Taste the famous San Francisco clam chowder or sample a couple of fresh oysters.
Sample a delicious, melty pupusa, brought to us by immigrants from El Salvador. A pupusa is a thick flatbread made with cornmeal or rice flour, like the Venezuelan and Colombian arepa. It is usually stuffed with one or more ingredients. Afterwards, try a tasty snack that is the mystery Secret Dish of the day. And last, but not least, have some delicious ice cream created by a family-owned market and creamery near Dolores Park.
To wrap up your time and end your tour, a breathtaking view of the city is in store just steps away from the place San Francisco received its name.
